ONE MILE PER MINUTE

2002, 10 Minutes
Digital Video & Animation

Synopsis: A joyride through a landscape molded by seductive televison and corporate America where disaster and terror are logos for your consumption. This is the age of the culture jammed consumer preened with Friends hair, Survivor courage and Fox News awareness. A generation emptying their wallets for the most important corporate product of all: lifestyle. The psychological road trip across battered America travels at One Mile per Minute.

Background: I began working on One Mile Per Minute soon after the terrorist attacks on September 11th - mostly out of disgust for the corporate branding of the disaster on various news stations.

Just a few months earlier at the Duchess County Fair, I watched children ecstatically sliding down an inflatable sinking Titanic, ironically mimicking the painful and horrific deaths of that tragedy's victims. As our world was turned upside down by the terrorist attacks, I began to wonder if there would eventually be a September 11th play set?

Of course, there were many.

Consumerism and capitalism cloud our judgment, numb us to reality and make us ignorant to facts. One Mile per Minute is no dissertation on the ill affects of corporate America and consumerism, but it is a sobering and ironic reflection on how Americans deal with tragedy, numb their pain and allow every aspect of their lives to be molded.
